Crimson Moon co-op
Optional two-player hunts with shared lives and scaled difficulty.
Crimson Moon is built so you can crusade alone or bring a second Nephilim. Steam lists Online Co-op. Official copy repeats the line: slay together. Previews and sponsored early-look videos treat a partner as a first-class way to play, not a bolted-on photo mode. This page covers what two-player hunts actually change: lives, revives, loot, difficulty, and hub etiquette. If you still need the solo loop, read getting started first. Combat timing does not become optional because someone else is on screen; keep the combat guide open.
What co-op is, and what it is not
It is two-player online PvE. It is not a four-stack raid, not local split-screen as a marketed pillar, and not player-versus-player. There is no direct trading. You can drop items on the ground for a friend to pick up. Chests can roll multiple drops so you are not rolling dice over a single sword. Those details come from pre-launch explainers that walked through a full first district with a partner. Treat them as the current design, and confirm the drop prompt in-game on September 1.
Both players return to Sanctus Clypeus between hunts. You each own a loadout. You each pick an Angel. Synergy is a build problem, not a matchmade role queue. If both of you stack the same greedy two-hander and skip a shield, the life pool will notice. Talk about who holds space before you ready up at the War Table.
Lives and revives
The lives system is the co-op headline. Preview players noted that a partner can revive you, and that a shared or parallel life pool still lets a hunt continue after a down. Do not treat revive as infinite. If both of you lie on the floor, the pool is the only thing left. Spend a life on purpose when a revive would drag the living player into a worse position. Elite rooms that already killed one Nephilim will kill the second during a heroic animation.
Difficulty scales with group size. Official feature lists call this out so solo players are not handed a co-op health budget and pairs are not handed a solo budget. Higher difficulty still means better rewards. That is a conversation: if one of you is new, do not crank modifiers to impress the trailer. Learn Forsaken Streets together, then push.
Loot etiquette on a shared hunt
Purification is personal. Gear you want permanently has to go through your hub visit and Gajov, not through your friend’s stash. Because chests can produce multiple drops, ping and grab instead of racing. If a Weapon Art is clearly for their build and junk for yours, drop it. Consumables that fill the two pre-hunt slots are easier to share at Lottie’s shop than in a burning street.
Do not both purify the same experimental art on hunt one. Split the homework. One of you tests a projectile art; the other tests a slam. After the run, compare notes on the weapons page and decide who keeps which identity for hunt two. Co-op is a lab if you use it that way.
Combat jobs without classes
There are no tanks and healers. There are shields, two-handers, Arts, Boons, and Angels. A useful pair is one space-holder and one art-heavy killer, or two complementary Angels so you do not transform on the same pack and go mortal together. Angel Mode still kills greedy players. Stagger your transformations. If your partner is in the form, you play mortal cleanup and save your gauge for the next room.
Executions are per enemy type. In co-op, do not steal a stagger your partner set up unless you agreed. The animation is the payoff that makes the melee fantasy work. Call targets on elites. Ignore that rule and you will both dump stamina into a vampire that is no longer even looking at you.
Hub, match, and social extras
Steam lists in-game chat and online interactivity. Use it for War Table picks: district, difficulty, modifiers. The mission board evolves with new objectives and trials; a pair that always queues the same ward will miss that. Rotate. Archspire Cathedral and Ramshorn Keep will teach different enemies than Forsaken Streets.
If you bought Deluxe, cosmetics such as Ceremonial Armor do not confer extra lives. If one of you earned a First Look set, it is a flex, not a carry. Check editions so you are not arguing about DLC at the loadout station.
A co-op briefing you can send a friend
- Wishlist the same platform. Store pages have not listed cross-play as a feature pillar. One preview claimed full crossplay; that is not a Steam or Xbox badge. Do not assume PS5 can grab a Steam friend until the launched client or a patch note says so.
- Watch the Gamescom trailer together so the fantasy matches the purchase.
- Read this page and getting started.
- Pick complementary weapons, not twin copies.
- Agree that revives beat hero wipes.
- Purify after the hunt, then rejoin.
Co-op is the feature that will sell this $19.99 game to people who would never finish a solo Soulslike. Play like you intend to keep the friend through Elk Grove Academy, not like you are racing a DPS meter that does not exist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you enter Gildenarch.
How many players can join a Crimson Moon hunt?
Official materials describe optional two-player online co-op. There is no advertised four-player raid stack.
Can I trade gear with my partner?
There is no direct trading. You can drop items on the ground, and chests can yield multiple drops so both hunters get a roll.
Does difficulty change in co-op?
Yes. Dynamic difficulty scaling is a listed feature so the hunt matches group size. Higher difficulty still pays better loot.
Is split-screen supported?
Marketing and Steam categories emphasize online co-op. Do not plan a couch session until the launched client lists local play.
