Crimson Moon Nexus Gates and Boons

The mid-hunt choices that define whether your run becomes a build or a collage.

Nexus Gates and Boons

Boons are the mid-hunt deck that separates a coherent run from a chaotic one. They appear in two forms: as one-of-three choices at Nexus Gates during a hunt, and as passive effects on equipment you purify. Mereda in Sanctus Clypeus also converts lore scrolls into permanent Boons that can appear at future Nexus Gates. This page is the complete guide to how Boons work, how to stack them, and how to use them strategically. Pair it with how runs work for the hunt loop and loot and progression for the purification economy.

What Are Nexus Gates?

Nexus Gates are checkpoints scattered through each Ward. When you reach one, the mission objective completes and you choose one Boon from a selection of three. These choices are the moment your run identity gets confirmed or lost.

Official beginner advice is explicit: choose Boons that work together rather than chasing the largest isolated number. A projectile Weapon Art plus cooldown Boons is a build. A projectile Weapon Art plus three unrelated defensive Boons is a collage.

Nexus Gates also offer health or mana refills before pushing deeper in some missions. Use these strategically — entering a boss room with full resources is often worth more than a third Boon choice.

How Boons Work

Boons are modifiers that take effect during a run. They fall into several categories:

Offensive Boons increase damage, apply status effects, or boost critical hits. Examples include light attacks applying frost, weapon hits triggering burn, or enhanced attacks while in Angel Form.

Defensive Boons improve survival through damage reduction, healing effects, or thorns. Examples include a defensive aura at low health, damage reflection when hit, or increased armor during Angel Form.

Resource Boons affect stamina, Weapon Art cooldown, Angel gauge, or consumable efficiency. Examples include reduced art cooldown, increased gauge gain on hit, or extra consumable charges.

Utility Boons provide mobility, detection, or exploration advantages. Examples include reveal hidden enemies, increased movement speed, or extended pickup radius.

The Three Boon Choice

When you reach a Nexus Gate, you see three Boon options. Each choice is permanent for that run. Consider:

What your Weapon Art needs. If your art is a long-cooldown burst, take cooldown reduction. If your art is a setup tool, take Boons that extend stagger windows.

What your Angel form does. If your Angel emphasizes burst damage, take Boons that extend Angel duration or increase its damage. If your Angel is defensive, take Boons that complement that identity.

What you already have. Check your equipment Boons. If your armor already applies bleed, do not stack bleed again. Fill the gaps your gear does not cover.

The boss ahead. If you know the next room has a heavy elite, prioritize survival. If the path is clear, push damage.

Stacking and Synergy

Boons stack with equipment effects and with each other when they share a keyword. The key principle: choose Boons that reinforce your existing identity rather than adding unrelated effects.

Good synergy example: A two-handed weapon with a fire-based Weapon Art. You take a Boon that applies burn on heavy attacks, a Boon that increases burn damage, and a Boon that extends burn duration. All three feed the same status effect.

Poor synergy example: Taking frost Boons, bleed Boons, and burn Boons simultaneously. None of them fully activate because your build does not focus any single element.

Boons from Equipment

Some gear pieces come with Boons built in. These are permanent as long as the item is equipped, and they carry over if the gear is Purified after a successful run. Equipment Boons should define your build direction before you enter a Nexus Gate. If your shield has a parry Boon, your Boon choices should complement parry timing rather than contradict it.

Mereda and Lore Boons

Mereda, the historian in Sanctus Clypeus, trades lore scrolls you find in Gildenarch for additional Boons that can appear at future Nexus Gates. This is progression that never appears as a sword icon. If you skip Mereda, you skip permanent power.

The lore scroll questline starts after your first run when you talk to Mereda at the library. Collect scrolls every run. Return them to Mereda between hunts. The Boons she unlocks are added to the random pool at future Nexus Gates.

Boss Room Boons

Some Nexus Gates appear directly before boss encounters. When this happens, prioritize Boons that match your fight strategy:

For aggressive strategies: Take damage Boons and Angel-related Boons. The boss is the last fight of the run — spend resources here.

For defensive strategies: Take survival Boons. A longer fight favors those who can outlast mistakes.

For staggered strategies: Take resource Boons. Frequent art use and sustained pressure over burst.

A Boon Selection Framework

Before each Nexus Gate, ask:

  1. What is my Weapon Art? What does it need?
  2. What is my Angel form? What does it want?
  3. What Boons do I already have from equipment?
  4. What is the next room? Elite, boss, or clear path?
  5. Am I choosing a third Boon, or taking the health or mana restore?

Common Boon Mistakes

Chasing numbers. A Boon that adds 15% damage is worse than a Boon that adds 15% damage to your Weapon Art specifically, if your Weapon Art is your main damage source.

Stacking conflicting effects. Frost, bleed, and burn simultaneously means none of them fully activate. Pick one element and commit.

Saving Boons for later. Boons are run-specific. A Boon you never activated is a wasted choice.

Ignoring equipment Boons. Equipment Boons define the build direction before you enter the Gate. Choosing Gate Boons that contradict your gear is how collages happen.

Skipping Mereda. Lore scroll Boons are permanent additions to your future Nexus Gate options. Skipping Mereda is leaving power on the table.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you enter Gildenarch.

What is a Nexus Gate in Crimson Moon?

A Nexus Gate is a checkpoint in each Ward where you complete the mission objective and choose one of three Boons to enhance your run.

How do I get better Boons?

Collect lore scrolls and return them to Mereda in Sanctus Clypeus. She unlocks additional Boons that can appear at future Nexus Gates. Equipment rarity also affects Boon quality.

Should I take damage or defensive Boons?

Match the Boon to your build identity. A damage-focused build takes damage Boons. A defensive build takes survival Boons. A hybrid takes resource Boons that keep both options open.

Can Boons stack?

Boons stack with each other and with equipment effects when they share a keyword. Taking multiple frost Boons reinforces a frost build. Taking frost, burn, and bleed simultaneously weakens all three.

Do Boons carry over after a run?

Nexus Gate Boons are temporary and reset between runs. Equipment Boons are permanent if the gear is Purified. Lore scroll Boons unlocked through Mereda are permanent additions to your future Gate options.
